Octophone is an interactive sculpture that utilizes a telecommunication tool called a “ringback system”. There are 2 red pedestals with lighted tops that hold four circa 1980 touch-tone telephones each. When one of the 4 telephones is “open” it will ring until a participant picks up the corresponding telephone on the 2nd pedestal, at that time with both lines “open” the 2 participants are able to talk to each another. The overall effect of this interactive sculpture is slightly “madcap” because as it so often happens, playing with Octophone begins to slide into a “Lucille Ball experience” for the 2 participants.
